    Google search 'tuning a 318 mopar' then read the article on the mopar muscle website, that should help you get the grunt to fry the tires!

    i think the 318 was only rated at around 165 hp, your comp ratio isnt gonna help much but the right cam, intake and carb set up to go with your exhaust will make a mighty diffrence!

    I am going to cam and induction soon when I can.

    It has been fully serviced last December As for the emotions think its all Ben removed long ago so that's not a problem ;-)

    And yes it's got some 31" tall tyres. That I will change when I can as they was on the truck when I got it

    Might run the pipes to the back then when I build the new exhaust

    As adam said, 80's engine is gona be underpowered. Yanks delt with the emissions in a "retard the cam, lean it out,lower the comp ratio,slow the advance curve and bolt loads of **** all over the engine" kind of way. They didn't make the engine more effitient (sp) just made it pull lower emissions.
    Balence pipe is a good sugestion. Headers a probly to big for the engine as it is now, slowing the gas speed, to short too. But will be good for when you start tuning the engine eg. cam,inlet,carb,ignition,heads and so on. More "back boxes" If your talking about increasing the back pressure, stop, less back pressure is always a good thing. You want the exhaust to pulled out of the engine, therfore starting the pull in from the inlet valve, and clearing the exhaust resduals from the combustion chamber. With more back pressure the engine has to pump the exhaust out, wich obviously buggers up the scaviging (sp) just mentioned.
    With the current setup, you may pull some better bottom end torque by lengthening the exhaust pipes to the back of the truck. Other than that, get rid of all the emissions rubbish and rebuild the engine with good cam, inlet, carb and ignition, I'd also look into the compression ratio, problt wants upping.

    It's what? A 2.5 ton truck with an 80's 318ci engine. Your lucky if you've got 200hp there. I'm not knocking it, I'm just saying it not gonna sit and smoke the tyres on a dry road with equipment it has.
    Also has it got taller tyres as that's going to hurt getting what torque it has on to the road. If it hasn't had one in a while give it a tune up, plugs, leads check timing ect. Change the air filter to an open element, make sure the throttle is opening all the way ect.
    Main advice would be to enjoy what you have & do t expect a 1980 v8 to be a smoke machine.

    I believe if you fit a balance pipe after the headers somewhere you will increase low down torque, which should assist with tyre frying activities!

    Lack of power

    Hi guys just a quick question I have a dodge ram pickup 1980 running a 318v8 all standard apart from exhaust its got headers on and 2.5" pipe work to 2 cherry bomb boxes and then exits by the rear wheel it very loud which I like but seem like no grunt (it won't light the rear wheels up in the dry) now it goes well and pulls up to motorway cruising well.

    So would more back boxes increase the low down grunt??

    I know it won't pull my face off but I have seen other pickups with the same engine light the tyres lol???
