    Welcome Vin

Money can by anything but it doesn't mean everything is for sale.

It's not gonna happen right now (and those figure websites are ******** really lol) but one day I hope someone does offer me a wad of cash for this website

I'm highly unlikely to take the offer (unless I need a kidney or liver or something) but it'd be nice to get one as if it were a payslip saying the work was actually 'worth' something

On the other hand, I recently took a project Ford Pop as a p/x on Volkstorque lol.
The reasoning behind that was that I didn't have time to look after it as it deserved through focussing on this place so passed it on to someone better focussed and suited.

My 5 year stint at being the 'boss' was over but it's got the boost it needed from our very own fbiiburton

Bear in mind though, over the 5 years i've put around 10,000 into running it and I walked away with this

Yep, you can. It's a really hard one to put into words with the reasoning behind why people by and sell them.

Generally though it's due to either the financial aspect (sponsors, adverts etc brining in revenue) or just wanting to keep it going.

The buying thing could be turned round into why set one up ? It costs to host a site so why do it ? Why spend my money for others to use and abuse it ?

    Read here for my answer

There always comes a point where the financial aspect gets involved but unless you've got an infinite amount of cash it's got to happen. The donations and ads on here trickle cash in to help paying for the hosting each month. The more traffic you get the more it costs. For example the new server cost around 3,000 to make sure this site can keep up with all the traffic you lot want to throw at it (the last one was 4 years old and rented so dead money).

As the site grows then companies are likely to want to use it to market their products to their ideal audience. Again, this in turn pays for the increased traffic and hardware upgrades.

In time, it can seem like there's a hell of a lot of money coming in (value ???) but at the same time it's difficult to see all the extra going out to keep things up to speed.

A person (or company) may see a point where the running and admin costs are outweighed by the money or reach they could gain from marketing through the website (say for advertising a show or selling car parts). At that point, the site has a 'value'.

Take a look at for example, that's got over 380,000 members and as such will have (a massive) value through it's viewing figures. Be it either through adverts (more than likely just subsidising the running costs) or through the promotional aspect (it is one of the worlds biggest forums and is owned by the company that makes this and their forum software).

There's lots of different reasons really but I hope that helps make things a bit clearer.

    Pretty much lol.

They're usually quite generous as they want you to put a link up that points back to their website.

I think that last one just doesn't like me
