Secondhand pumps often leak for a little while when being fired up after standing about. Give it a chnace for the seals to re-swell and they'll normally stop anyway.

there will be a 1/4" ish hole behind the pulley on the pump body where water would leak from if the pump's knackered. you should be able to see staining from there if it's been leaking.

    rover v8 water pump

Just taken off my water pump off my P6 v8. Got the short nose, not had engine running yet but there has been past water leak problems and I am unsure about the condition of the pump. I don't want to blow 115 on a new one if this one just needs a clean/tidy up. there appears not to be any damage inside and I can spin it quite easily by hand, it doesn't bind and is not loose. Is it supposed to spin freely for a short time when spun by hand ?... silly question but as I say I don't want to buy a new one if this one is ok.
