    1956 Ford F-100 - rear axle issue (Dana 44)

    Hi guys.

    I've got a bit of a problem with my Dana 44 rear axle. It keep puking out all its lubricant from the breather vent on the top of the brake pipe banjo. There's no leak at all anywhere else, and it seems otherwise to be on good shape. It works, and is quiet in operation (as far as I can tell with the cocophony going on elsewhere in the truck).

    I'm deducing that if it was a pressure build-up, the vent wouldn't be venting at all - air, lubricant, whatever. So it can't be that, surely? And it's not over-filled because the filler plug is in the bottom half of the diff cover plate and acts as its own protection from overfilling. It was filled with the truck level.

    Other than removing it, stripping it down, and turning it into a big job, has anyone got any better ideas? Or advice on things to look at?

    How high is the vent? Told to add a small tube to mine to get vent as high as top of diff, no leaks then.

    Thanks guys.

    Interesting comment about adding a tube to raise the height of the breather. The guys on the American truck forum have said the same thing when I raised the issue there.

    The oil I put in was standard EP80/90. But I have since found that there might have been some contamination in there before I fitted it. My bloody fault for not stripping it down and checking before installation. Lesson learned.

    The standard axle (on when I got the truck) was happy with the breather where and as it was - all I did was swap it over into the 'new' axle in the same manner as before.

    Yep, mine leaked as std, no leaks with a 2 inch tube fitted though.

    OK, all now seems in control. I fixed a length of garden hose to the base of the breather and ran it over the chassis cross-member by the nearby shock top mount, so that can act like a bit of header tank. So far so good.

    Thanks again for the advice.

    I'll still strip down the axle later in the year if the current state of affairs lasts that long. I've got an engine rebuild/refurb planned for the off-season anyway.
