Right, the play in my steering box has been measured, and the play is 63mm after adjustement with a 14.5" wheel. So, long long story, complaint and appeal going to VOSA etc, the MOT man failed it and was a real dick about it claiming there should be no play, and it being American shouldn't be on British roads. This meant scrapping my Baja shell (a good, tax exempt 1969 shell with a full Baja kit fitted, loads of bracing etc done, good glass, perfect rot free doors etc) to make room in the yard to stash the van. I work offshore so the Missus was dealing with it because I'm away, she's pregnant and does not need the stress and hassle, and the tax expired on the 1st so rather than dicking around she has stashed it until I get home. We also have a do-gooder nosey neighbour up to road who can be seen checking tax discs every month and shopping any he finds to be expired. Not worth the risk of leaving it even for a day or two really, I already lost a SORN'd donor BMW 735 with a nice inline 6 because, stupidly, I dragged it out of my yard to pull the engine and gearbox, ran into a problem with a snapped tool, so left it under a tarp outside my yard while I waited for the weekend and the good weather and to replace said tool. Caught nosey neighbour lifting the tarp to get the registration, 2 days later, yellow clamp, a day later, car gone and a big fat fine to boot. I was in the wrong though so now play everything by the book.
ANYWAY, rant and ramble over, what steering box is needed for said van? I can't seem to find anything so far? And does anyone know how much play is built into the steering box from new? Just thinking I may well replace it anyway since, granted, there is pay in it, so might as well sort that and the fuel line that was on the advisroy while it's in there.
Also, while I'm on, wiper motor. Mine is painfully slow, have checked the voltage, connections, the earth, all are fine. So motor must be on it's last legs. Which wiper motor do these things use, and how in the name of **** and buggery do you get it out of there. From what I can see you need arms like Mr Tickle to get the linkage undone from the motor on the other side of the bulkhead.
