    302 ford probs

    hi there,
    i went to start the ford up this afternoon and bang there was a loud thunk and the motor shook violently for 2-3 turns then siezed solid with a puff of blue smoke out the left exhaust the motor will not turn on the starter or a socket on the crank. before i pull it apart any ideas as to what happenedi was thinking a dropped valve or a snapped con rod not looking forward to the bill

    take the plugs out that side see if there is any damage to the plug it will tell you that cylinder might be the one

    is it outside,? any anti-freeze in it,? if no. could be cracked somewhere,
    if yes,and its not frozen, try removing the starter then try turning with a socket,
    is it a strong running motor, or a tired old thing thats on its last legs,?

    antifreeze was sorted at begining of november the motor was strong ie no smoke on startup and running 50psi oil pressure going to take plugs out and starter off tomorrow night

    as above, try with starter removed first it may be a seized starter

    a mate had a 302 windsor a while back that snapped the timing chain and locked solid, mind you it was a totally worn out motor that got through more oil than gas, when he pulled it apart the chain had almost worn through the timing case,

    302 ford probs

    sorry for the wait but computer problem added to the expence of sorting out the 302 first i took the plugs out and found that no 5 and 8 were wet as in water took the inlet off then the heads bloody head gaskets on both sides were shot lucky though it had antifreeze so there was no rust on the bores fitted new gaskets and reground valves and fitted new springs and collets refitted heads and inlet with new gaskets changed oil (which was clean) and fitted new filter now every thing was back together time to start up because i'm using smithy mufflers and they had water antifreeze mix in them when it started it filled my workshop with steam took it for a run and got stopped by the rozzers but after explaining to them it was steam and not smoke from the zorsts and that it will clear i was told to go so now the old girl runs sweet again and i am skint
    christmas is almost here theres 18 inches of snow and im going to open a bottle of jack

    Hydraulicly locked engines engines can cause a lot of problems that go unseen, normally bent conrods, and can be bent on turning with the starter as well, Im not saying yours will be bent but its can happen
