I've tested the MSD as per manufacturer spec. It's definitely not 180 out, the rotor is pointing at cylinder one when the position is at TDC for cylinder one. You day the rotor has to point before No 1?

Can't be 180 out, been there, done that - just gets you big backfires every now and then. OP stated it DOES RUN but not for long and that's only after adding FUEL. HTH

If I'm setting an engine up by eye then I put the rotor just before No.1 but it should run on No.1 and you can adjust from there

Am I correct in saying soon as the intake valve closes on No 1, soon as it comes doing to TDC on the crank that is the correct time to set the rotor? I'll adjust the distributor tomorrow so the rotor is just before No 1.

when I viewed the cat to buy, the seller tried for two hours to get it started, he burnt the starter motor out trying. Didn't bother me as I knew I wanted to rebuild. Since then I ditched the original Holley carb and fitted twin Edelbrocks. The electric pump is working fine as I used it to drain the old fuel from the tank to replace with fresh.

The only thing thats original from when I brought the cat is the ignition side.

After the rebuild I did notice the firing order was wrong. It's a new cam but the rotor still runs anti clockwise.

With the half cup of fuel added, it didn't pop or back fire, sounded like it was firing correctly

Timing sounds retarded, hard to start, kicking back might feel like locking up. Try advancing it while cranking, also measure the voltage at the coil when cranking, make sure the box is getting full 12v. Check the msd hasn’t got any chips such as start retard etc activated.

I've tried rotating the dizzy eitherway and still no good. Would I be better using the marking on the damper, set it to X? degrees BTDC and then set the rotor?

Initially the dizzy mechanical advance had seized, cleaned it with some WD40 and now moves freely. From what I've been reading the symptoms sound like the ignition is too retarded, when it has fuel it'll randomly sound like the motor wants to lock up.

The MSD had a direct feed from the battery and is seeing about 8.5 bolts during cranking. Being an MSD 6, doesn't look like the timing can be adjusted with a timing control box, would it be worth investing in one?

Jym, what fuel are you trying to run it on, and presume new plugs of the right type/ range. Dave

that's your problem. I don't think MSD's ballast system. MSD needs a min of 9v before it's ceases to operate. You may have a spark with the plug out, but under compression I reckon you have a very weak or no spark at all.
