    '59 Impala gearbox issue

The '59 Impala (purchased on a whim) wont go backwards seems to drive forwards ok, (don't know whether it changes up) it was very low on fluid, and hoped that might be the problem, but topped it up and now it just leaks; is this a 2 speed powerglide? (all appears to be original)
Just a passer by as you might say.

does it move in reverse if you give it some throttle or not at all ? Best to drop the fluid and check the pan, it might have fried reverse gear clutch pack. If the box has been low, have you moved it through all gear positions to fill the convertor and valve body ? You also need to check the fluid with it running in neutral or park.

Gearbox could be Powerglide or Turboglide. If the shifter is P R N D Gr it’s a Turboglide, if not Powerglide. Early Powerglide boxes were cast iron, later boxes aluminium. Automatic gearboxes are cauldrons of black magic to me so I can offer no advice on the fault though

Hi guys, checked the fluid level in N running (hot) needed about 3.5 litres so pretty low, been driving it so think the fluid is circulated, but no movement in reverse no matter how hard I rev the engine!; gear shift says PRNDL and whilst I haven't been right under the car, it looks like a lump of cast iron

if there is no debris in the pan to indicate damage to a clutch pack, no issue with the linkage and it drive in other gears, i’d say it likely either adjustment of the reverse band or replacement of the servo seals which actuate it.
