9" Ford 3rd member
Thought id pull the diff from my axle and try n set up the pre load and adjust it so that i didnt have to put up with the ear splitting whine
(no not the misses)
And found this
Which i feel is the cause of the whine as you can actually open the crack up easily with your fingers so could only imagine the same would happen while trying to push the car along
Now the diff came from a 78 Lincon so i would guess maybe a big block and i know ive just rebuilt my enging BUT it is only a 305 so what would cause it to break ?????
Got any pics of the bits. Need to see the mating faces, material structure and surrounding areas. That way we'll be able to see what the cause rather than the effect was.
Crown wheel and Pinion showing no signs of wear
It was complete when i removed it and only striped it down after finding the crack
unsure of play in the rear bearing (which fits in the hole) and unsure of play in front bearing (crush) as the rear was moving so much due to the crack
Common place for them to break Vince, Got quite a few here like that, Not sure why i keep them though 8-(
I thought i had read somewhere they were weak at that point but always believed 9" to be ultra strong :beuj:
Steve as it's only thin there do you think that a weld would be upto the job

thats exactly why they sell aftermarket center sections and pinion supports.
Thats ok if youve got the money to throw at it of course and even if i did (which i havent :shake:) I would want to make sure that the break wasnt due to my error (I make a lot of errors :roll:) :D
don't blame you mate, I had my diff assembled for me, I'm happy enough to build box's and motors but just never bothered to learn how to set up a center section properly.
