'98 XJR Supercharged 4.0L, good donor?

    Howdy People,

A mate in France has come across a 1998 XJR with the Supercharged 4.0L v8 in it and is asking if there's any known or inherit problems with these motors.

Anyone know the skinny on them?

    Cheers

    Gotzy

The problem with most later stuff is the electronics and how any PATS ( Passive Anti Theft System )system is intergrated into it all. Can often be very expensive if not impossible to seperate engine electronics / key /switch /fob. PATS ecu etc.

Someone I knew, their employer fitted one to his Ultima. He used an aftermarket ECU because they couldnt work around the standard one. That said, it was 8 years ago, so knowledge has moved on.

A quick google shows these guys as doing ECU chipping, so they'd have a good idea about whats needed to get it to run standalone.http://www.paramount-performance.com..._Upgrades.html

Early engines are alusil and prone to problems ,some replaced by Jaguar under warranty but many slipped by and can cost serious money to sort out , also early v8 water pumps and timing gear are a poor design and very expensive to replace.
I own an xjr 6 and would only consider one of the later [ 2002 on ] v8s as the reliability improved.
As a complete car fast and fun ,but as an engine donor there are plenty better ways to go...
