not all aluminium is weldable (without specialist equipment) but most comercialy available aluminium is weldable by a competent welder, you need to look more at the state it is in ( ie soft or hard) as ali isnt an easy material to work if its in a hard state (it cracks if you bend it). i would recomend speaking to the person who is doing the welding before buying the material. if you get stuck let me know, i will dig out some specs and suppliers for you. i also know a man local to me (im in essex) who does tanks for cobra kit cars so might be able to help if you havnt yet got a cheap welder.

    hi trev
im gonna weld the tank(well im gonna try ) but have no idea what grade to use.
it needs to be folded as well.
weve knocked ns4 on the head for being to hard.

blackpop on here came up with ns3 or s1c.
do these mean anything to you.

if you could fine the correct grade that would be great.

we have a cheap supplier local.

    thanks
    wayne

i take it your going to tig weld it, i will see if i can sort out best grade to use (im not a sheet metal man i do billet mainly but have a good mate who knows all about welding ali sheet) do you have a decent welding plant, most diy welders wont produce a good enough weld it will end up pourous and leak like a seive (been there done that)

NS3 is harder than S1C; the latter is very soft, and best suited to forming compound curves. I'd use the NS3, although NS4 isn't unworkable.
You can gas-weld sheet ally quite nicely with the right flux.

spoke to my mate who does all this sort of thing for cobra kit cars, he recomended NS3, dont forget to baffle it to avoid fuel slosh.
