    Alternator wiring question

Can someone please confirm the correct wiring for an alternator? My "understanding" is that the large terminal gets a permanent 12v feed. The smaller one gets an ignition feed, which goes through a dash warning light, which will go out when the alternator spins?

    Thanks guys
    Mark

It's not actually the feed but output. That can go direct to battery but it is more usual to pick up at the starter solenoid, same terminal the battery connects to . You are correct power in to small terminal via light bulb on dash.

basicly thats correct, there are a few things to consider, such as regulators can be internal or external, a resistor is used as well, the "large" terminal must be heavy guage wire and usually goes to the "hot" side of the starter, theres also a "one wire hookup" alternator, they normally come with a wiring dia, a quick google on the subject will tell ya loads of info. good luck.

    whoops too slow again,

    Re: Alternator wiring question

Thanks for setting me straight on this guys. My alternator and starter are on different sides of the engine, so I think it would be neater to go straight to the battery for the "large" terminal ;-). The regulator is all contained inside, but the ignition feed terminal is actually 3 very small ones. Thanks guys, you've helped me out a lot

Don't forget a good earth strap from the engine block to the chassis, i have seen many fried shifter cables after being used to earth the starter.
