    Annual Princess ball joint problem.

Time to get my Coupe back on the road.

It hasn't been driven many miles over the years. Yet at every MOT my tester always advises me that the nearside front balljoint boot is split.

Changing them is not a problem and much gratitude to Kapri for his write up on Princess ball joint. The only thing I am worried about is availability of these units as time goes by. If I could figure out why the joint rubber only last months, I could prevent it.

Any ideas as to why the rubber keeps splitting?

I would superglue it and then coat it with some liquid glycerine. Maybe they are drying up with sitting?

I'll give that a go. It only happens with the near side front joint and not the off side?

you can buy 'poly' ball joint boots that should last. theyre like the american boots, they just press tight over the joint as you do up the nut not clipping to it with a circlip like uk ones.
need a job done on your project? i may be able to help.

you may be able to adapt these

VW Heritage for VW parts and accessories

either that or look around a few 4x4 modders as they are popular on buggies and rock hoppers
