Any Chevy Vortec experts on here

Has anybody got any experience with Vortec engines?

We need to swap out the Vortec V6 from a '90 C1500 truck, can we use any other Vortec V6 engine, or were there year or model changes? I'm sure we'll need to reuse our inlet manifold and engine wiring harness but is it as simple as that?

They were fitted in Blazers, Astros and Pick-ups but are they all basically the same or were there fundamental differences?

Would I be asking for trouble fitting a V8? Would any small block fit with a manifold swap or are Vortecs unique only to themselves?

    Any help appreciated.

    Ian.

    Cheers Gary,
I'm guessing from the apparent lack of knowledge out there that they're either a black art or just ****.

They are basically a v8 with 2 cylinders chopped off. Vortech was the generic name for later generation chevy engine. They have roller cams and different heads & manifolds to pre Vortech. Inlet manifold has a different bolt pattern to pre Vortech.
V8 is a bolt in swap.

I think they are ****!!!! got one in my blazer and hate the little bloody crap piece of junk! Would have fitted a V8 if I had known that the 8 is actually slightly SHORTER than the v6 unit. I believe that they are the same as the 4.3l engines in boats as well. I gave a guy the numbers off my spare engine block as he thought he might have needed one to replace the one in his boat, the casting numbers were a match. I think the Astro van is the same as well.
The one thing that they do very well is leak water at the inlet manifold that is in two bits. Give it a google to see.
Sorry just realised that this has become a bit of a rant. I just hate the bloody thing!!!!!!!!!!
