    Auto C3 gearbox problems

Wonder if any of you guys can help me out, ive changed a c3 auto box because it has leaked oil and cooked reverse, The new box that went is was a so called low milage box, but ive now filled it up with oil and havent got any drive at all?

Now im sure everything went in right, pretty sure the box wouldn't shut up if the torque convertor wasn't all the way home,

Has anyone got any ideas to try before i take it all out again?

Are you sure you've checked the oil in park with the engine running? Next thing if it hasn't got rev or fwd then you'll have broken the pump gears fitting the trans on the engine.

Neutral or park. When you fitted the trans did you push it against the engine and tighten the bolts by hand. Then did you check the converter by rattling it in it's holes (in the flexplate)to check it wasn't binding?

Hi andy thanks for your reply, well i tightened the torque convertor up before i done the bell housing, but to be completley honest i did find some resistance while turning the crank to get to the torque convertor bolts lined up in the starter, didn't really think about it at the time, can they brake this easy?

Ah....Yes,they can break that easy. The gears are cast iron.
You'll have to pull the trans out.Hopefully you've only broken the gears and not damaged the pump housing and torque converter.
You should ALWAYS put the trans in by hand, tighten the bolts by hand whilst checking the converter is free. Any binding and you need to stop and find out why.Tightening the bolts on the trans without any of this always ends up in disaster..
I always suggest to people to have a minimum of 2 doing this kind of job, preferably 3.
Don't take it to heart. Just call it a lesson.I've known very good mechanics do the same thing. I get calls all the while. Hello,i've just fitted an engine/trans and got no drive...

On a C3 no.You need a tool to line the pump up to the bellhousing as there's no dowels.. If you know a machinist they can make you one. It has to fit in the pump bush tight and on the stator support tight to line them up properly
Without it you can get pump whine from misalignment.

i answered above but you could pull the bellhousing/pump assembly off and use it as a whole thing. Check for feed hole differences and bush sizes/ring pack depth but i'm pretty sure C3's had the same pump arrangment on all the models.
Make sure as you're pulling it off that the direct/fwd clutch drums don't move or you'll need to pull it all apart. Hold the input shaft with the palm of your hand whilst pulling the bellhousing off. Use 2 people. You still might have trouble if the gasket sticks..
