Best engine for a 100e, Essex? Cologne? Zetec? please help

Hello guys, I'm rodding for Ford Pop 100e, I've been thinking of an Essex v6 but heard some bad things about them eg weight etc, is a Cologne any better? what would you put in? I'm looking at simple and reliable but like the sound of a 'v' engine.
    Cheers

Big stonking V8, All depends on budget. If your thinking of a v6 then you might aswell go an extra 2 cylinders IMHO.

IMO, For simplicity & reliability fit a 4 cylinder Zetec, plenty of good motors around, lots of parts available to adapt it to a type 9 five speed and sort the water manifolding etc., not so much power that a 105E axle (which is a bolt in job) wouldn't live. Essex V6 won't give a lot more power than a good Zetec, it's very heavy, and spares can't be so easy to get on what is now an old motor.

The Cologne engine weighs roughly the same as an Essex V6.IMHO the 2.8 is a better engine and there's plenty of the about still. The problem is finding the earlier inlet manifolds that take a carb.I guess the injection system wouldn't be the end of the world to set up,they were pressure fed bosh systems. An xR4 would give you all the parts. At the end of the day they never went to bad did they, they're good old engines but there might well be a far better more modern option.

There is also the Cosworth version of the Cologne V6 engine. 200 bhp, and said to be more economical than the 2.9L if you keep your foot off the loud pedal.

Found in two forms, BOA in Granada Scorpio and BOB in the blob shaped Scorpio.

BOA is the one to go for, as the ECU is not too complicated. They are all automatic, but you can fit a 2.9 flywheel and MT75 gearbox if you prefer manual. Watch out for timing chain problems. The BOB was slightly more powerful, but you can fit BOB cams to a BOA engine to give another 10 to 15 bhp. Granadas with orange indicators are non cat, and white are cat.
