    Body Repair Recommendation

Hello all and Happy New Year,

I have a 1978 Trans am, my first experience of owning a yank tank and I would appreciate some advice on the following.

I have had her 2 months now (Shes kept in a garage when not in use). The body on her is solid but I have got a few rust bubbles coming through and would like to treat them before they become a major problem.

The worst areas are both the doors at the bottom, they may need a re-skin. Please see attached photos: -

    ***Please see below post***

I am seeking advice on whether these problems could be treated by just rubbing back and respraying those problem bits without respraying the entire car as I only have a budget of £1000-£1500 at a push.

I would also like recommendations of good but not overly expensive body work specialists who could tackle this for me.

Look forward to hearing from you,

    Steve.

(My internet doesnt get linked up til the 14th so I can only access on-line every few day so please bear with me for responses. Thank you.)

Steve ,its pretty tough to make any accurate comments on those pic's,the only observations i would make are-
The car looks to have been re-paint previously and no etch primer was used,

the blistering looks like it may turn to pin holes in the metal when you get going with grinder .

but generally i dont think there's any horror stories lurking(on those pic's lol)

i would think you will get a decent job done for your budget, but you ought to consider, dimantling /refitting it to save yourself some cost, and let the B/Paint shop
use the funds avalable to concentrate on doing what need doing properly,Good luck !,Bry

Always hard to tell from pix but can't see any thing terrible here. I would try doing small rust spots with a Dremel rather than a grinder, get back to bright steel and prime with etch primer and blend in as a small spot repair.
On doors try to avoid skins if smaller patch repairs are possible [ not all skins are a nice fit]

All looks like typical rust areas for these cars.
Bottom of doors, definitely reskin the damaged areas, it will always return otherwise.
Bonnet edges you should get away with a good rub down treat with rust remover & repaint.
Rear wheel arches could turn out to be worse than you think, they usually are, lol. They may need new arc lips, only a good strip back will tell. You should get away with only a partial repaint though.

The car has deffinateley been painted before , probably not that long ago.
The "bubbles" are just the tip of whats there , possible metal replacement will be needed.

Find someone who will see the job through with you and understands you want a repair thats going to last and not something that looks good for a few months.

As Bryan said , get it back to bare solid metal and treat it with a preventative ( we use Jenolite) and then a good etch primer before anything else. When the repairs are done , get behind it and in the cavity/box section , and drown it with waxoyl.

Good luck , send us some pics when you have it done

Steve It's not as bad as you think. Give me a ring.
Looking at the doors it appears to be coming up from the bottom edge rather than coming through from behind. Have the door bottoms been rubbing or scraped?
