Yeah mine was like that on my buick I could only just about compress it fully but runs fine, I put a bit of break in oil on the end just to help it on its way for the first few miles until it's well oiled up, I'm not sure if your meant to do it but it hasn't hurt mine none

Imagine you have it covered already, but someone may have taken the pump pushrod out if you had an electric pump fitted

yep and getting the pushrod to stay 'up' while fitting the pump is easy when you know how. there's a short bolt on the front of the block that threads in toward the pushrod drilling. take the bolt out and you can press a screwdriver or summat against the pushrod while you fit the pump (or a longer bolt as long as you only finger tighten it against the pushrod). don't forget to refit the short bolt or you'll have a bad oil leak that looks for all the world like a leaky front crank oil seal.
need a job done on your project? i may be able to help.

From memory there's a plate that goes between the pump and the block too.... may just have a blanking plate fitted
