    Chevy C10 350 gearbox problems

I wonder if anyone could help? I have a Chevy C10 fitted with a 350 engine & auto gearbox from what I believe was a '73 Camaro.

A few weeks ago on a trip having been running fine, I set off for home, and within a few miles it was refusing to change up...the only way I can describe it is that it feels as though it is trying to pull 40 tonnes of weight. I stopped at the nearest layby & waited for breakdown assistance. The recovery guy said the torque converter was red-hot, but the gearbox sump was lukewarm to the touch. The fluid level was to the max on the dipstick & still a healthy red colour.

I now have reverse gear but no forward gears whatsoever. Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to whether it's a torque converter problem, or an issue with the valve body or the box itself?

I'm now stuck at home with the truck & getting frustrated with being messed about by "friends" offering assistance with transportation & garages saying they'll have a look then continuously telling me to ring back next week.

Many thanks in advance for any advice or assistance.

Just fired her up & gave her a try - I still have reverse as strong as ever....in 1st, 2nd or drive, it just about creeps, and I mean creeps. I'm puzzled to say the least & am probably looking at an expensive trip to a transmission shop to work out what the problem is......either that or sell her as is....

Have you had a look/sniff at the fluid?
No longer selling anything Hot Rod related. Not on this site anyway. Don't bother searching Ebay either, they got too greedy.........

Hi Paul, the fluid seems fine, a healthy red colour, no bubbles to suggest moisure in there, and comes up to the max on the dipstick when engine at normal running temp.

Poss a valve body fault ,as the torque converter is trying to pressure oil to a gear but not getting there ie getting hot as oil has no where to go,being as the oil is not black does not sound like pressure plates have worn ,there are some ball bearing in there and 1 might have stuck.I would drop the body out and have a look.

Reverse gear normal i think runs separate to the forward gears hence why you have reverse.

Sounds like a forward clutch issue. Unless you've blown a gasket out of the VB,or one of the valves has come out of the valve body.
It'll require a trans out if it's the forward clutch, and you'll need to figure out why it has smoked it.
