    Cooling problems

    Hi All,

Yesterday I got the radiator plumbed in in my mustang, it was running fine took it for a quick run up the road, not far, around half a mile, got back and the water in the rad was boiling, needless to say stopped the engine quickly. The electric fan didn't come on, removed the fan and tested it, that works fine. Would there be a temp sensor from the engine to allow current to the fan? It seems there is intermittent continuity on the wires to the fan, but surely this would be the case until the fan is activated. Could it just be as simple as a tits up thermostat? Haven't checked it as I was more interested in why the fan didn't come on.

    Cheers,

    Stu.

p.s. before you ask there isn't a switch for the fan

    Hi Stu,

Think i would check your thermostat anyway just to be on the safe side.

Regards your fan not cutting in and out, there could be a number of reasons, relay (if there is one in the circuit) faulty tempreature switch, bad feed or earth.

Give us a call if you want, in all evening from 18.30

    Cheers.

    Russ.

    Hi Russ,

The trouble is, I can't see where the wiring goes, it runs about 2 - 3 foot then disappears into the main loom, so I have no idea after that. I'll give you a bell later if I remember, got a load of running about to do tonight.

    Cheers,

    Stu.

    Lost you phone number aswell.

    Re: Cooling problems

What makes you say the water in the rad was boiling, was it spitting it out or was the rad knocking? My money would be on an air lock. If there's no water running over the fan switch, it won't work, it needs hot water, not hot air.
How'd the weekend go? Well, at the moment it looks like a dolphin that's been caught in a boats propeller.

    Re: Cooling problems

If its boiling up on a short run and you've just changed the rad it's likely to be an air block. Have you tried running it for a few mins with the cap off to try and get it to burp? How did you refill the cooling system? Also think about changing the stat. Worthwhile when your upgrading the cooling system.

    Re: Cooling problems

After 5(ish)hrs yesterday Russ and myself seemed to have cured the problem, fingers crossed, the water was boiling up in the header tank, we filled the rad again run it with the cap off, but the rad was still cold in th middle at the top, bled the system again, it gave out a very small amount of air and all was good. Many thanks to Russ for giving up his evening and helping me out, he also wired in the electric fan which works an absolute treat, thanks again.

    Cheers,

    Stu.

    Hi Stu,

No problem, i was happy to help.

Don't forget to get and fit an in-line fuse for the constant live. Better safe than sorry.

    Cheers.

    Russ.
