do sidepipes benifit from a x over?

Ive see many exhausts with a x pipe or connecting pipe joining the two before exiting to the left and right,is it helpful?does it make a big difference?im looking into sidepipes for my own engine, theyre big bore, straight through with no baffles planned untill i see how it sounds/runs,,should i include some type of X after the headers anyway?

As far as I am aware the X pipe is the better way of scavenging the flow from the headers and they should be 15" to 18" from the end of the headers. If you are going old school side pipe's, they will exit way before the X pipe need's to be.
I have long tube headers and header extension pipe to X pipe and then Two flowmaster 40 series and down turn's before the axle. All in 3" pipe. Sounds as good as it could lol imo anyway. The old school side pipe's were just loud and came off the end of the header collector's, but did have a glass packed muffler in there that just got louder with age lol.

yeah 15-18 inch is quite a way back,id seen some build them with a U after the crossover, bringing the pipes forwards again to meet the side pipes,,not keen on that lol.I wont know if it needs some back pressure till i get them on but think maybe a crossover pipe wont do any harm, easier to put in while fabricating them than after, just not sure if id gain on them or totally unnessesary,as long as its loud i dont mind )
