    Engine Clearances

    Hi guys,

I'm currently helping a mate fit a zetec engine into a spitfire and i have a query, we have the engine about where we need it & mounts etc look about right but it's very tight at a couple of bits.

Main question is what's the opinion re clearance minimums? At the front crank pulley its only about 4mm clear of the steering rack (centre area non moving) and similar clearance at the steering column. I'm just not sure if it's enough, other than the standard rotation of crank nothing should move but i'm not quite convinced
Obviously we can't just raise it easily without causing multiple other issues with alignment etc. so whats your opinion, will we get away with it with minimum clearance or is it just not enough?

It really depends on how stiff the engine mounts are but 4mm clearance is a bit on the tight side. The engine will move towards the driver side (ie steering column) under acceleration and the 4mm will reduce accordingly. Also if a mount breaks or deteiorates with time the engine could move and jam the steering column.
    Cheers Denis

Thanks Denis, hadn't thought about the engine moving sideways under torque, thats a great point. Do you have any thoughts about a minimum amount of clearance?

If you cant move engine back or sideways how about fabricating a couple of stabiliser/tie bars( adjustable with poly bushes or teflon lined rose joints?

to check mine I grabbed it and gave itm a good shake like I was trying to rip it out in a rage

If it's clear for that then it's clear for 99% of anything

Many thanks for replies, think we'll need to try & move it a bit. Any thoughts about a minimum clearance?

    hi davy
can you not put urethane mounts in.the type fitted between a inner and outer sleeve
that way there is not frontward movement at all and sideways would be max 4 0r 5mm if ever they failed which is unlikely.
pop im doing has 5mm between the blower belt and rack and about the same between headers and steering tube between uj,s.

with rubber type mounts id say about 15mm all round as they tend to move a lot more
