Ford AOD help - won't change out of first

My AOD was worn out, it worked okay but would sometimes start slipping and the (fresh) fluid quickly turned black so I had it rebuilt. A complete rebuild kit went into it and I've recently fitted it back into the car but it won't shift out of first. Put it into "drive" and it pulls away in first, but stays there. Selecting 2nd or 1st is the same, it stays in first. Reverse is okay and it has the correct level of fluid.

The guy that rebuilt it is doing some research but I wondered if anyone on here had heard of this and knew how to sort it (preferably without having to take it out of the car again!).

When i rebuilt mine i was advised to "deburr all edges on the valve body piston to prevent sticking. The smallest of bits can cause an issue.
This would be my first port of call and probably your builders. That and any vacuum issues that would affect or prevent a shift.

Fluid level correct and TV cable correct (no vacuum in these). I’ve spent some time this afternoon researching the symptoms and a sticking governor valve (?) gets mentioned a lot.

My mistake, was thinking of the c4 i did befire the AOD, if i am thinking correctly this time and from memory, there is a tiny mesh filter cone that fits in the governor port and this can cause problems if missed out during a rebuild (easy to miss)

Did he rebuild it for free?
If not take it back and tell him it's not working.

No, it wasn’t for free...... The problem is it’s now back in the car and he isn’t local. I’ve spoken to him & he’s doing some research to see if there’s anything that can be done in-situ to save me having to take the f**king thing out again. I’m asking on here in case anyone knows of anything that causes this that’s easily sorted. I’m not holding much hope.

When I rebuilt my 700r4 I put the filter in the wrong place in the side of the pump. I had no drive gears at all. I pulled it back out reluctantly and reinstalled it in the correct position and all was well after that. It was the only thing that I was unsure of when I was rebuilding it. I had two books as guides but neither showed its position clearly hence me putting it in the wrong place. I guess it prevented flow or something. A bollock ache taking it back out but I took a deep breathe and got on with it.
