    Ford diesel wont rev!!!!

    Hey All,

I finally got the air out of my Ford 1.8 XLD and it has now started, but it runs at high revs and when you press the throttle nothing at all happens, it just keeps revving. Any ideas why?

I drove the Fiesta that it was in, to my garage, took it out and fitted it elsewhere without touching any adjusting screws or the like, only change being fitting an electric fuel pump at the tank, could that be the cause?

    Thanks, Ady

Is the throttle cable too tight?
There are 2 stop screws, 1 either end of the throttle lever travel on the pump. Make sure lever is against the idle stop with no throttle, and against the throttle limit screw at full throttle>

Grrrrrrrr grrrrrrrr grrrrrrrrr grrrrrrrrrrr. I been trying to sort this out for 2 solid days now all to no avail. It's a simple set up, fuel tank, pipe to electric pump, pipe to filter, pipe to Inlet on injection pump, all new parts up to the injection pump. Return pipe to tank has no valves, it just goes straight to the tank.

I've tried bypassing the electric pump, the revs died down but the throttle still didn't work.

I've removed the return pipe, no difference.

The throttle cable is not connected.

Disconnected the waxstat cable, no difference.

I'm pretty sure that no air is getting in anywhere.

I've taken the top off the injector pump and it all seems to be working fine and the shaft is turning with the lever.

I really don't want to have to pay for a reconditioned injection pump unless it is absolutely 100% the cause of the problem.

Tried 5 local garages this morning to see if a mechanic can come out to me but none will even entertain leaving their tearoom behind, and unfortunately I cannot get it to them.

The engine had stood for 4 years, could something be gummed up somewhere do you think. I assume that the governor is one of the moving parts at the top of the injection pump. Bosch diesel pump schematics seem to be a bit sparse.

Time for some beer I think.

Possible the delivery pump is stuck internally if it's been sitting around. Have had this problem with CAV pumps, don't know what to suggest to help you other than try a replacement, this is the part that controls the fueling and if it's delivering a fixed amount this will give give you the symtoms you describe. Good luck.

Hey Everyone, thanks for the ideas, had to remove the pump and take it to a specialist in the end. Truckdoctor was nearest the problem. Apparently there was water inside and as it sat so long, something rusted to something else and another bit got stuck somewhere.

Lesson learnt, don't leave a diesel engine sitting unused for a long while.
