    Gearbox options

I have a friend that doesn't come on this site. He has a mk2 escort with a 550HP cosworth with a T5 in it. He is ruining gearboxes wholesale. Is there an alternative to a T5 that will last more than one race meeting?
If it's got tits or tyres, its gonna be trouble

I put a quaife gear set in my T5, good for over 700bhp,
I've given mine some serious abuse with no trouble

Plenty of alternatives...but how much does he want to spend, and what sort of ratios does he need or want ?

Is it race only ? Presumably it must be very aggressive racing if he's breaking boxes that easily ?

It seems to be the synchro dogs that break every time. It's possibly his driving style being too aggressive but other people we know that run T5s also say they are a consumable product. What cost is involved in replacing with Quaife internals.

Upgrade to a wc version of the T5 like fitted in the TVR`s , they can poke up with a bit more grief and are supported with loads of reasonably priced aftermarket upgrade parts. You may have to play about with clutch covers and spigot bearings but other than that its a bolt in.

The stuff from Gearboxman doesnt look expensive for the T5

    Gearboxman - gearkits

But really whether that will fix the problem depends on the cause.

A clutch that doesnt release properly could help kill synchros, as could crazy shifting, or maybe not using the clutch correctly. Or perhaps wrong oil, overheating oil etc.

So any gearsset that retains those same synchro setup....the problem is unlikely to change.

A dog style box would rectify any synchro issue....but of course the dogs can be damaged with improper shifting etc Nothing is bulletproof

If it really is a dedicated racer and he could tolerate 4 or 5 speeds with a 1:1 top...some of the G-Force style boxes from the US are actually reasonable value.

This video covers a lot of options

As far as I know the Cosworth T5 box is a world class (WC) box, mine is. they are only rated at 300 hp, Tremec TKO 500/600 would take the power but I guess would need work to fit to the Cosworth engine/bellhousing.

Cossie T5 is not the same as the US WC T5

If nothing else, do the US versions not have a 10 spline input ? Cossie has 23.
