Hi,
I have just bought a 57 GMC Pick up with a 350 V8. Looking for a few pointers and some advise, I am a bike man and this is my first venture into trucks. Any recommendations for parts suppliers, the truck is up and running so mainly sundries at present.

How much and what grade of oil?.

Any readly avaliable oil filters that fit?,

There are no door seals fitted, is this correct?,

Do "peep mirrors" work ?.

I am based in South Cumbria so a bit of a desert as far as specialist shops are concerned.

Thanks in antisipation.

Cheers

Everything is available for these old trucks right down to nuts and bolts.
Service items for the 350 can be had from several UK suppliers(US Automotive, Real Steel etc) so that's not a problem.
Door seals should be fitted around the complete perimeter of the panel. Available from US suppliers or some truck specialists on ebay.
The GMC is bascially the same as the Chevy of that year apart from some front panels, dash, grill etc.
Check out LMC truck parts or Brothers. Both in the states but it will show you what's available.

I use Valvoline VR 1 20/50 in my 350. Sold as a "racing" oil, it has a high zinc content which is good . Available at Euro car parts. I use AC Delco PF35 filters as originally fitted by GM from Rodley Motors. Do not use Fram as some folk have had very bad luck with their filters causing engine damage. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help to date all good stuff,

I have just been looking about it tonight and have removed the airfilter , a large deep pan affair with a high center tube that the enclosed filter fits over, in the bottom of the large pan fitted to the carb there was a quantity of oil, 1/4-1/2 an inch I would estimate, to me it appears to be an oil bath is this correct. I have removed the oil and cleaned out the pan. I have not put any oil back in it or ran the motor. Is oil in there correct?, if so how much?, also does it need to be there?, is it detrimental to run without it?.

Cheers
