how to measure fuel tank for sender

where do i mearure my tank to get the depth to cut and fit new sender.

is it from bottom of tank to the top.

the sender sits below this point about half inch or so.

in the instructions it says to measure and cut the sender to half depth of the tank plus 1 inch plus 1 inch+5/16

all measurement they give to cut sender are from the flange on sender.

do i need to take into account the distance above sender.

i just want it to be as accurate as possible.

    thanks

    jack

in my opinon i would make it so it was short of the bottom, that way when it reads empty on the gauge you will still have a bit of fuel, does that make sence?
