How to start a 327 SBC?

I have re-built the engine and finally got it in the car, but it won't start!

I have 6lb pressure of fuel and checked the timing so many times. I even took off the left rocker cover and watched the exhaust valve for NO 6 (Nearest the front) close and the inlet start to open to make sure I'm on NO 1 compression.
I checked fuel, I have a squirt from the accelerator jets (and 6lb of pressure). I checked the spark on NO 2 and checked it sparked just as NO 1 timing marks come up to the marks.

As I start to turn it over it tries to start (the turning seems to speed up a bit and it tries) and then goes into the constant turning with no sign of life.

So, who has any ideas? HELP!!!
If I wasn't meant to go that fast, the pedal would only go half way!

Left bank is 1357 right bank is 2468 . You sure you got the firing order right? Make sure both vaves are closed on #1 when the timing mark is at TDC
    There's no replacement for displacement.

I bypassed the switch for the starter solenoid, due to problems, so I have a push button and minimal wiring- but the ignition is still through the switch.!!

Well if it's got fuel & a spark it should start.

You could try loosening the dizzy, (mark where you think it should be first) and twist it a little either way when cranking. If timing is off then you will catch it one way or the other.
Make sure battery is fully charged again before you next try.

hi mark, when you adjusted the tappets did you wind them all down tight or in order 3/4 turn from no free play at the pushrod? had this with mates who rebuilt engines before and had only done positive stop rockers previously. the valves could be part open even off the cam lobe.
need a job done on your project? i may be able to help.
