    It's in again...............

I have replaced the 327 in the car and fired it up today. It ran.............

....for a few seconds and then spluttered out of life and blew back through the carb. Tried to start it again and it didn't want to play.

I wonder if I have the rockers set too tight. I tightened down on the nut until it was difficult to turn with my fingers and then gave it another 1/2 turn, as I have been taught, but I wonder if I should only tighten until I loose the slap on the rocker (up and down) and then give it a half turn. I'm sure the timing will need to be adjusted, but I think it's close enough for now to start it.

Any ideas? BTW, I have fuel!!
If I wasn't meant to go that fast, the pedal would only go half way!

    Hi mark
i did say slight resistance....not till you cant turn them. you should just about feel the pushrod being touched by the rocker....and then 1/2 a turn mate

I normally get it to the point its touching, then back it off again. Do the same again a couple of times til im sure its not holding on the nut or anything else and then with it JUST BARELY touching the pushrod, give it half a turn. They will be silent but zero lash at that point

It's all about feel Mark and I would say you have been way too heavy handed.

it sounds more like timing is your issue rather than lifters being overtightened. i normally do what you do, twist in your fingers until its tight but then give it 3/4 of a turn - but thats what the cam manufacturer recommends.

Problem with that Mark is that everybody's idea of twist is different. I've watched a few people really struggle with it over the years. Having said that why is the timing not right if you've just built it up? It should be close?

Interestingly I saw and tried a while ago, a very thin feeler gauge old school between rocker and valve and then tightened down 1 full turn, or summat, can't remember.
I'm sure there's a way to work out what a turn equals in millimetres etc, then you can add that feeler gauge extra bit on.
It makes em all the same, as has been said feeling the drag etc is quite vague.
but only if you have roller rockers which give a flat surface same as valve tip,
Them poxy stamped rockers aint all flat.

Failing that Dr Dees method in the Tech section was the best 'normal' way I tried.

Anyhoo, my sbc runs a bit quieter now.
