    Leaking roof window

I`ve just bought recently a 87 ford econoline day van and it`s great. Took it to the hot rod drags for the first trip out and it was bliss compaired with a tent.Any hoo the rubbers gone on one or possibly both the little forward facing windows in the roof. Now there`s loads of these vans around and i can`t seem to find a web site to buy new ones from.Has anyone else had this problem, can you get new rubbers made, they do`nt look hard to get out,I just thought that there must be somewhere that sells them off the shelf. In fact there`s a number of little bits and bobs that it needs internally but I can`t find a site that sells the day van fittings. Is anybody breaking one? Your help would be much appreciated cheers

When you say the rubbers are gone , if they are only leaking and not perished try this. Use some washing up liquid on the rubber, it was told to me for a sunroof repair and it works.
    Dont know how

    Leaking

I don't know the glass off hand but it can be one of 2 fitments. If the window has a black ceramic band around the outer edge its more than likely a bonded or "Direct glazed"unit. The Rubber trim is a finisher and does not seal anything. The clue is behind the black ceramic band on the glass. If it is leaking it will need to be removed totally, body cleaned and primed and rebonded in with a new finisher.
The other fitment is "indirect glazed" which is basically a rubber gasket which could be sealed or if perished, can be replaced. Personally i'd find a glazing company and get them to advise you. Don't go to a "high St " company as they don't work with much older stuff and will charge you alot. I know as i worked for one for 25 years and i'm a Master Autoglazier. If you want any more info or a chat pm and i'll give you my number. Best get it sorted asap as damp can wreck an awful lot of things.

    Cheers Dan

Thanks Dan, I`m fairly sure its a normal rubber seal with a piece of chrome/plastic strip that fits into the middle of the rubber to tighten it up.It`s a 87 van and i`m 99% sure it`s not bonded.I think what has happened is the glued joint has split probably due to UV light, and thats where the water is getting in.Your absolutely right I must get it done and I have a caravan specialist just up the road from me that i was thinking of asking to look at it.I was hoping someone may have known where I could have baught a new rubber for it being as i`ve already said there`re not uncommon yank vans. Being able to chat to you about it would only help though so yes i would like your number. Cheers Paddy
