QuestionMotorbike non standard exhaust at mot time...

    Howdy,

just fitted a lovely black megaphone silencer on my 2011 125 bike - the original chinese one fell off.

Just looked over the mot check list for bikes and it states that on bikes after summat like 1985 any non standard exhausts will be checked for a BSAU 193 conformity stamp????!!!!!

WTF! no warning when I bought the product! (only got it as it's way cheaper than ****e original replacement).

Anyhoo, does anyone know if they bother checking it?
OR, should I affix one of the stamped name plate tags with said code on to silencer (widely available on fleabay) just to keep the man happy.?

    Thanks in advance

As long as it's not too loud you should be fine, even with the stamp if it's to noisy it'll fail. Most of my friends bikes have aftermarket/homemade cans and most of them have MOTs

I keep a set of standard silencers for MOT time on my Harleys, although last year they were a little more lenient on one that I didn't have a set for. The advisory mentions 'noisy exhaust'...

A fair tester will pass and advise on loudness as mentioned. As long as there are no markings that denote 'not for road use' then you'll be ok. (And the way around that is to cover it: a tester is not permitted to remove it).

The criteria for loudness is whether or not it is louder than the OE exhaust and that is where the fairness comes in - if you don't have two bikes the same side by side then how can one compare?

I also change exhaust can at MOT time. Take off the very small and very loud carbon one and re fit the original triumph one on my 955 Daytona.
Makes sense to me not to run the risk of a fail for a five minute job.
