    Oil degradation?

My wife has a 2011 Ford Ka (petrol), she's had it from new and it now has a whopping 5,200 miles on the clock. I check it over every year, but because of the low mileage I still haven't changed the oil/filter (the oil still looks new).

Does oil degrade over time as well as through use? I don't see the point of changing it yet unless it does degrade?

No oil does not degrade over time , only through use ,if it looks and feels ok it is.

change the filter, Fiat 500 oil filters corrode. Had one in today with oil weeping from the body of the filter, its not the first either, from up top it looked ok, but from underneath it was corroded. Also keep an eye on the lefthand inner cv joint, oil leaks from the gear selector seal onto the driveshaft at around 6-7000 miles.
Its no good in the garage, Drive it!

Personally I'd change it. especially if the car is doing loads of short journeys.
    Oil and filter, cheap insurance.

I'll change them, oil filter appears to be only accessible to those with long arms though.......

Yes the oil will degrade over time , normally the limit is 2 years if you dont reach the millage intervals for fully synthetic , less for mineral based oils .

so in short get it changed !
