    One for the Engine Builders / Machinists

    Hey People,

    Been pulling down the the Minors race motor to check it over and as it's an old build it's had all of the crank case painted to seal in any casting sand. It's been painted on all un-machined surfaces including the caps but as it's been on there 30 years it's starting to flake off in places I want to remove the paint. Now the block doesn't need any machining so what are the options for removing the paint, will a hot tank achieve it or is there another type of tank the machinists use that is more suitable that won't have any effect on the machined surfaces? Any other ideas from anyone or is it going to be some careful time with some paint stripper and then a hot tank afterwards?

    I'd de-grease the block, clean all the holes out with long engine cleaning brushes, then paintstripper, wash it off with hot soapy water, jet wash it, clean all the holes out again, jet wash it again and blow dry with an airline.

    Not seen that product over here ,but it looks pretty good,i would of thought a similar product would be available in the uk,i think its probably alkaline based.

    get it dipped and re do the paint with Glyptol. I've had cast blocks with an almost gravel like debris able to be picked off after dipping. A die grinder sorts most of it out, but painiting seals it in and is supposed to aid oil return to the sump.

    I'm not sure if it's actual acid dipping or just hot caustic dip that most engine reconditioners use, but it's heavy going enough to talk most paint off. I've had a couple done and it makes it easier to start with a clean block. You might struggle to find places with this now as I think the chemical disposal is a problem for them.
