    Petrol Engine diesel axle

    If you have a diesel engine and fit a Petrol engine will the original axle be ok.Will the gearing be wrong would the rear axle need to be changed to a petrol one,Thank you

    as diesel engines rev slower the diff ratio's tend to be higher (lower numerically) to achieve similar cruising speeds. so if the petrol engine has enough power then you'd have a higher top speed, or if not top gear would be like an overdrive/cruising gear. imagine the diesel is flat out at 4500rpm at say 100mph. now add anoth 1500rpm (petrol engine revs to 6000rpm) and you'll be going considerably faster. years ago i swapped a ford A series from diesel 6cyl' to petrol v6 (3.0 from an A series also) and it was way too fast (wound up it'd do over 90mph!) for it's 'handling'.
