    pontiac 400 dipstick

on my 72 pontiac 400 the dipstick currently ends at the manifold on the passenger side, but im sure its WAY to short and should be attached up on the front of the head by the ac pump, can anyone advise if my hunch is right ?? as i dont know how much oil to put in, think its 6 quarts?
    thanks matt

5 quarts without the filter plus what the filter holds. Wouldn't comment on the dipstick as they vary and some aftermarket types are not the same [intended for headers and or non stock sumps ]

one thing to be careful of with pontiac engines is where the dipstick enters the sump, it should have a curved pipe on the inside of the block to guide the stick past the crank. If this is missing or gets knocked off with the wrong dipstick you will either lose the dipstick into the sump when it hits the crank or will end up putting in the wrong amount of oil. The best way to know is drain what you have in there and then with the now empty block, put in 5 quarts plus the amount for the filter then put the stick in and put a mark on it at that level .

run the engine to fill the new filter before marking the stick though.
