It's got to have CO less than 4.5% and HC below 1200ppm. Visual is pre 75

Q plates are undetermined year of manufacture, regardless of when they were registered, so visual smoke test AFAIK, but I'm sure Streetfighter(IIRC) will be along shortly to enlighten us as I seem to remember he's a tester.

You're correct, shows how many Q plates I test, they're to be treated as pre 75 and I also got it wrong about pre 75 being visual, it's actually pre 79 but my excuse is the machine tells us the type of test to do.

The info to use in nearer the front of the manual, hang on...I'll be back.

EDIT . How to use this manual / introduction / page 8 ...

Vehicle ‘first used’ Dates - Application of Test Criteria
NT’s will normally be provided with the vehicle details as part of the Vehicle
Specific Information supplied by the MOT database. This will usually
include the vehicle’s ‘first used’ date. Where this information is available,
the NT should only use Reasons for Rejection applicable to the vehicle’s
    age.
However, in cases where this information is not available or incorrect, the
NT should determine the vehicle’s ‘first used’ date as follows:
    a. Its date of manufacture, if the vehicle was originally used without being
registered in GB (e.g., an imported vehicle or ex-HM Forces vehicle),
    or
    b. Vehicles having a Q plate registration when presented for MOT are to
    be treated as follows:
    For emission purposes only,
    all these types
are to be considered as vehicles first used before
    1 August 1975
    .
    For
    all other testing purposes
they are to be considered as being first
    used on
    1 January 1971,
    or
    c. In any other case, the earlier of either:

Its date of first registration, or

The date six months after it was manufactured.
This information should be entered onto the VTS Device to enable the NT
    to select the appropriat

    It reads to me

    1) emmissions pre 75
    2) For all other testing purposes January 1971
    3) For any other purposes ( ie not to do with the actual test ) they are treated per registration date .

I believe this to mean that to pass the test you don't need a foglight but to meet in use C&U , as it's 84 , you would NEED them along with any other incidental stuff such as side repeaters etc.

That's the way I though it worked, once had a "I'll pass it without X, Y and Z, but you can't legally drive it home" which of course I didn't
