    Rack and Pinion swap?

    Hi there!

I've got a leaking Jaguar rack and pinion, put in new seals and rings but that won't solve the leaking

    My question:

Is there a rack and pinion that could be used instead of the rack & pinion from Jaguar?
So swap the whole rack & pinion for another brand, such as Ford or something else?
Something with a liitle work that would the job.

    Anybody did such a swap?
I've read that the Jag items are prone to leak....
I thought swapping for another should solve the problem and maybe some better available parts.

This rack & pinion sits on a subframe from a '86 Jag XJ12 and is welded under a '59 Chevy Apache....

Hope to get some tips before I have to hunt for a new rack....

    Thanks!
    Cheers, Kees.

Rack has to be mounted in the correct place , with a set length between inner balljoints ( not track rod ends ) for all suspension to work correctly. You can succesfully fit another rack that is th same outer length but it will normally drive like crap.

Have the rack rebuilt by a reputable company. The company I use, for these racks, rebuild and give a years warrantee. Have been using them for years and never had a problem even after the warrantee ran out.
Don't have their details here, they're at the shop. Won't be back there 'till Monday. Oh, and they turn them round in 3 days, maybe a bit longer outside the UK.

    Okay, thanks guys!

    Rebuild mine is an option.
What years Jaguar uses the same steeringracks?
This is from a series III.

Is the XJ 6 and XJ 12 the same rack?
And when do we call it a XJ40?
That makes searching a lot less difficult if we have more options....
    Cheers, Kees.

    Hard to find one overhere.
Does the rack from a 1996 Sovereign fits?
    There two of them around.
Or what has to be done to make it fit?
Also can you unconnect the speedsensor without trouble?
    Cheers, Kees.
