range rover gearbox/dont need transfer case. What are optiona

Hi All, I'm sure this has been done by someone?

The Humber project I am helping on will have a rover 3.9 from a range rover, this is coming complete with the gearbox/transfer case.

Obviously the humber is not 4 wheel drive so dont need the transfer box bit.

    What are the options for

a] remveing the transfer box and adding a tail houseing from some other box??

b] fitting another gearbox that will fit. [must stay auto]

    cheers guys in advance

A couple of things here, yes you can use the box but you will need the tail housing section of a zf jag box with the speedo drive which means hunting out an early xj40. You will also need the short bit of prop and the flange for the box. Range rover box has the tailshaft already drilled to accept the shaft extension for the transfer box so just unbolt that . Even if you found a complete jag box you will still need lots of bits off the rangerover set up.

When I had my last breakers yard, I used to be inundated by offroaders using rangies buying xj6 auto boxes off me. apparently its quite easy to convert to them. could be an easy solution for you.

You need the front bell housing and torque convertor off the gearbox and then as "street fighter" says you need a box from a jag, it's a zf4hp22, and get the cables/shifter/oil filler and dipstick, got it all for £150, or if your going manual I have everything here, to mate up with a rover v8

I would keep the R/R box for a few reasons. The cam inside the box on the end of the kickdown is cut to suit the engine characteristics, the 3.9 R/R box will have the beefed up forward clutch, the gearbox is on the skew in relation to the engine and the R/R deep pan A. holds more fluid and B. is shaped to correct this, the R/R box has a different 1st gear ratio to the jag unit which is lower. It would be better to just rob the few bits off the jag box that you need to get a prop set up and speedo drive .
