Rear view cameras/screens intead of mirrors??

With this sort of tech getting easier and cheaper to use can we replace door mirrors with a camera and a monitor for each door?

In my van will be a stereo with a flip up screen connected to a rear mounted camera.
could easily fit a camera where the door mirrors are and a small screen in the dash for each side

Video screen switched on when the vehicle is in motion could be a legal issue.
Also this stuff is used a lot in boats to monitor the aft deck and it looks odd as you expect to see a mirrored image. Not to much of a problem in a boat but in a car where there is a lot more going on and your mind expects to see a mirrored image it would all look very strange and could be dangerous unless the video image was mirrored.

It's not allowable in BIVA as it has to be DIRECT vision, already clarified this against a Ferrari race kit.

I've got two camera in my trafic van with a 7 inch screen where the interior mirror would normally fit , the panel van with no rear door glas and a solid bulkhead doesn't have a mirror inside but the mounting slug I'd on the screen so it was easy to fabricate a mount , camera one is on the rear number plate light and is on all the time with the ignition , camer two is on the passenger side dash next to the cup holder poiting back at about 45 degrees ie into the blind spot on the near side , there is a v1/2 button on the screen that switches between the two cameras with this an the mirror on the near side I have near on 360 degree vision , it's very handy coming out of those junctions that are 45 degrees to the main road , the screen also lets you mirror the image so you get the view you would see in a mirror , all for £65.00 on fleabay

    Very interesting.
When I was in college (30 years ago now...eeek) I drew up a motorcycle design that used cameras instead of mirrors.
I admitted at the time that we had to wait for technology to catch up, which it now has, most definitely.
