Rolls Royce/Bentley V8 engine - viable alternative to Chevy V8????

What do you know about the Rolls Royce or Bentley V8 engine?

Seen a few complete engine and gearbox combo's for sale near me 2 early ones from silver shadows 70's on twin SU's and 2 mid eighties Bentley Turbo R engine/box setups, think they all use the TH400 auto box.

Anyhow I have a mad idea to use the Bentley engine instead of a chevy V8, one of the turbo engines is on a carb and dizzy, so no complicated ecu or wiring. The full back diff and subframe is also available.

My new truck needs engine, box and prop, so i might as well think outside the box on this one. its not going to be used everyday, so the MPG is not an issue. Question is anybody any experience of the Bentley/Rolls Royce L410 V8 engine.

they are pretty reliable so it should be fine, it was always the rot and dual brakes that let old roller's down.
need a job done on your project? i may be able to help.

V8's out of Shadow 1's and 2's arn't exactly the last thing in performance - although admittedly very smooooooooth - perhaps due to being such a low stage of tune. Older worn engines on carbs can suffer from severe percolation issues.

I can get a turbo r engine with all ancillaries, loom gearbox (th 400),prop rear subframe inc diff and axles for about £600It will need some fabrication work to fit, but its going in a truck so can strip it down to the chassis for good access. The Bentley is (or was) 300BHP and weighs 2000+ kg with a 0 - 60 of 6 secs, so is might be a good basis and bottom end for a drag truck me thinks and different ,

re engine gearbox weight not sure? its an alloy block, so might not be as much as BB chevy engine? its sounds daft but it might be a goer, I'll need to sleep on it. I more obvious choice would be a lexus V8, but i'm not sure i could handle all that wiring and ecu crap!

I would be interested in how you progress on that as I have build a copy of a 1931 20/25 Rolls albeit with Jag 4.2 and autobox !

I was told by someone that built some Bentley specials that a bare roller block weighs the same as a full sbc and that a full engine weighs the same as a full bbc
its alloy yes but not aluminium and if you strip one you will realise why its so smooth the block is an inch thick!

its a good point and need to find some Bentley info first.

I went to look at it at the weekend and even the plenuim chanber was 6 to 8 mm thick alloy and heavy.

Googling looks like a built sbc is about 500lb and a bbc 700 to 750lb. I take it that the TH400 although different bellhousing pattern to chevy will be approx same same and weight as a chevy unit.
