    Question Rover carb spacer paradox.

I'm running a Rover V8 with an Edelbrock performer dual plane manifold and 500cfm carb. Got a best time of 15.2 at the strip. Tried putting in a 1" open carb spacer to see if it did anything. Ended up with a 15.1, but that might not have anything to do with the spacer - I'd done a bunch of other things too. At the weekend I was getting 15.3/15.4s. So I thought - what would happen if I took the spacer off? I did this (and nothing else) and was rewarded with two 16.4s! Ouch.

Put the spacer back on and I was down to the 15.3 area again. With the spacer on, there was a slight bod off the line and another flat spot in 3rd at the top end of the strip.

Since I've managed 15.2 before the spacer went on, I'm surprised it's hurt so much to take it off again. Anyone got any ideas? Would a 1" spacer affect ignition timing?

you want a 4 hole spacer if the manifold a dual plane. I have an ABS 4 hole spacer if you want to try one, based in Hemel.

Forget the ET, too much affects the ET, tune for highest MPH.

Spacer thickness can cause bogging as you increase the plenum size, up the shooter size till it goes away or puffs out black on the hit.

No the spacer wouldn't affect ignition timing.

Just realised I've typed that wrong - with the spacer OFF, there was a slight bog off the line and in 3rd.

I actually wanted a four-bore ali spacer so I could get the grinder on it and try to taper the bores....

assuming it's a manual box you're looking at the shooter size, pump shot arm clearance, diaphragm etc. A bog at higher rpm is most likley vac secondaries, spring or diaphragm, blocked jets or insufficient bowl heights

not sure you can get a tapered 4 hole spacer, main purpose is to increase the venturi effect and plenum volume, I doubt you'd pick up anything from doing it unless you've port matched the manifold to the heads and the heads are already fairly efficient, ie flow well and bigger valve sizes.
