    Rover V8 rocker gear wear

I have three rover V8s and was hoping to get one decent rocker set from them.
All have discernable play on the rockers, and though I havent stripped them all, my gut feeling is if I can feel the play with my fingers they are knackered.
    Is thst correct?
Or is there an acceptable amount that can be checked?

I took one apart and there was a noticeable step on the shaft.
Others had similar play when I waggled the rocker arms.

If the rockers have done over 120k miles then they probably need replacing but because the hydraulic followers take up all the slack, even with worn rockers these tend to go on for ever. But you will loose some oil pressure if the rockers are worn. If you decide to replace with new then you need new rockers as well as new shafts. This is because worn rockers will have steel particles embedded in them (from the worn shaft) and the old rockers will wear into a new shafts very quickly. If you decide to replace the assembly it's difficult to find good items in the aftermarket scene as most types available will be very floppy on the shafts even before they start to wear. The price of OE rockers is massive. Best solution is to try and find a low mileage set from a factory engine.
