Wasn't the (aluminium) Powerglide available in two lengths? I seem to remember being given a spare shorter tailshaft & housing when I had my Impala.

There's a shorty kit available with a short output shaft and plate to bolt onto the back. The output shaft has to be fixture welded into the carrier.
I have the output shaft in stock and i can get the plate kit. I can also do the job too as you have to strip and rebuild the trans to do it all.
