You should have got a manual with it if it was a new GM job...I did. The timing is in that along with some carb settings I think.
The How To Build SBC engines book has a good section on setting initial timing. Worked every time for me,

thats big numbers for a 383, where'd that come from? Go for 36degrees adv at 3000rpm and use the best gas. About a 800cfm holley would suit it,but play around with the jets.

    There's no replacement for displacement.

Could be right...but may need less lead with a good chamber design. As for fuel, what's the static comp? Cam specs? Head material? Ignition components? If its 10:1 with a 300 degree cam advanced 4 degrees, ally heads and a good MSD then normal unleaded would likely be fine. More compression/less cam will be more marginal.

Okey dokey, ta for the comments.

Its a Patriot Performance crate bought via Jegs, not a GM zz383. Tho those GM 572's look tempting
It came with a 750cfm so see how it goes once its running right.
Says 500 on the box Mike, but knowing US horses . . .

    Hi Steve,
The suggestion already made for timing it @ 36 degrees spark lead with he advance all in should be good enough to start with.

Wouldn't have thought a US spec. street motor would need anything more than standard unleaded for fuel.

I'm building a 383 motor now, so Would be interested to see how big those 500 US horses look on a dyno in the UK too.

Still, whether they're 500 Shetland ponies or 500 Shire horses, should still liven up your ride considerably, good to know your nearly there.

my 383 is an ice built engine ,it made 489.9 [email protected] 6100 rpmand 465 ftlb`s of torque at 4600 rpm. it runs on super unleaded with 750 double pumper, 11-1 static compression and my total timinig is 32 degrees 3000 rpm .i don`t know if that helps with the timing onyour engine.
