And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts, And I looked and behold: a pale horse. And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And Hell followed with him.

As the others have said it's the oil pump drive. If you had the distributor in place the driveshaft would only have a small amount of endfloat and wouldn't be able to drop out of the drive slot in the oil pump.

BTW, even more more of a b*stard that your block's damaged as it's a four bolt main job.

The engine was a '400hp' 355ci SBC mill Smax Smith built for me.

Sadly the block had at some time suffered catastrophic damage (imo) between the centre cylinders
(looks like a big chunk of the casting broke off).
It was then repaired with some form of brazing.

A thousand miles in and the 'repair' gave way and flooded the adjacent cylinders with coolant
(I havn't poked at the repair, that's how it was discovered).

Shame really as the new stuff that had to be 'bought in' looks real peachy.
Scat rods, KB pistons, balanced etc.

    cheers
    KJ

ps we've already discussed the block and it's not rare enough to be economically repairable.
Hang on! why was it even attempted

naturally youve spoken to the "builder" about this, and no doubt he,s keen to put it right,
