    SBC shaking about violently

Its a 400 SBC with a 6-71 blower, was running fine, but needed crank replacing due to wear on nose which caused pulley to be loose.
While replacing the crank i had the rotating assembly balanced, however they did not seem to know what they were doing and I had to get Real Steel to talk to them to explain what to do!!
Now its all back together Ive got it running, but its shaking and vibrating worse than any engine Ive seen.
Of course I strongly suspect that they have messed up the balance job.
But before I pull it all out and strip it down AGAIN, is there something I'm missing?
I need to set the timing more accurately, and i will check with temp gun that all 8 are firing, and go over the firing order again. Hope to do this today, but i dont think any of that is going to stop the shakes!
I may live in East London, I may have a number plate that reads "Chopt", but I do NOT use 6" wheel spacers!

Some years back there was a company that had a fantastic reputation with Ford V6 engines. On the strength of that both a mate and I used them for some Chevy work. They ruined both cranks. Having said that I would double check the basics first as you say, always the first step.

Would the balancer make a difference? I know folks talk about internal or external balance (but I don't understand the two terms, not needing to!) so they may have balanced it without the balancer?
If I wasn't meant to go that fast, the pedal would only go half way!

400 SBC is external balanced, so the vibration damper and the flywheel/flexplate should both be weighted on one side. But if the dynamic balancing had been done properly any errors there would have been identified and corrected.

Like Plumpcars, I have also been the victim of crap balancing in the past [not on a V8], carried out by a well known company in the South East. Now I am very careful about who I use to do this work; unless you have access to a balancing machine, you just have to believe the work has been done correctly.

Yes as Stueee says, 400 is externally balanced. They had this and the flex plate and all relevant parts. I think their balancing guy probably was only used to 4 cyl not V8. Im absolutely gutted, spent money i couldnt really spare getting this done, was hoping to be driving the thing now. But it looks like ANOTHER strip down and more money. Oh well. Thats life.

defo go back to them, they shouldn't have taken it on if they didn't know what they're doing and if the cranked ruined, I'd expect them to replace it.

But I dont trust them to touch it now. I will contact them, and maybe get Real Steel to balance it properly. I hope they can write a report to prove the first company were at fault.

The crank I had ruined was a 454 which was also externally balanced.

if its so far out as to cause the engine to jump about that much , i would have thought it would have jumped right off their balancing machine .

did they definitely balance it with the offset weighted flywheel and front pulley on .

is there any chance it has a torque converter on it that was not include in the balancing or is on in the wrong place.

i am probably covering stuff you already thought of !

    regards

    Thanks Robert for your help.
Yes, they said front pulleys and flex plate on for balance. No suggestion that torque converter needed to go for balancing too.

Anyway, today I spoke to Charles at Real Steel, he was very helpful.
It could just be that I have adjusted the lifter preload incorrectly (I wrongly assumed they would empty of oil)

    Hoping this sorts it!
