Looks like a frost crack to me, can be welded but the block will have to be pre heated , or drill and tap the crack and seal over with JB weld , to be honest get another block , there have been a few on ebay in the 250 - 300 region . Water will have seeped from the crack straight into the oil in the rocker valley and that's where the rust has come from.

Alot of people rave about this block seal you can get (not rad weld) which you put in and run and it seals any cracks permanently , not had any experience myself thou

The moment I discovered my 4 bolt was a 2 bolt it would be in the back of my truck with a bfh by my side to get a full refund & fuel money. How the **** can someone honestly sell this as a good engine when it's so clearly damaged. If this is what the seller doesn't care about on the outside I'd hate to discover what's inside.

Sorry for your grief but I'd never have fitted it.
1955-56-57 Chevy new and used parts always available from www.randrhotrodimports.co.uk who I'm proud to have sponsor my '57 Chevy race car. 9.3 @ 155.8 mph / 0-60 = 1.47 seconds! Street legal :-)

agreed, i'd be telling the seller he's having it back whatever ebay's rules are. did you pay using paypal? maybe worth trying for a refund there as not as described (2 bolt not 4 regardless of the crack). if no luck then take it back with a persuasive mate or 2. good luck.
need a job done on your project? i may be able to help.

Cheers Jim. If it comes to that I'll definitely give you a call

Just called him and had a good natter. Nice bloke. Says if it was him and he just wanted it running brazing would be worth a shot. Otherwise he has short motors for what I bought this boat anchor for!

Steel seal has been mentioned to me. Got a money back guarantee on it too. But like you say another block is the better option, crate motor better still

Sadly I wasn't in the country when the mains were found to be 2 bolt. I just wanted to drive the bloody thing. Getting to Preston with it is more hassle than it's worth for me. But I've definitely learned a few lessons from this.

Irrespective of the outcome - if the seller does not want to 'play ball' and do the right thing if feasible you need to take the engine back to him and dump it on his property in the most inconvenient position for him.

Just got a call from the guy. He's going to try and sort me out a replacement for what's destined to be my new coffee table (or weighed in for scrap).
    I'm happier with that.
