    SBC starter problem

Its my first time with Chevy, so I've got it all to learn...
I have a 400 SBC with a TH400. I've been supplied with a 168 tooth flexplate from a reputable US parts supplier. I got a good used starter off this very forum, but when you try to offer it into place the nose cone of the starter fouls the ring gear. Its been suggested that I need a starter thats correct for the 168 tooth, but I've also read that these have diagonal mounting bolts, mine are just straight on the engine block.
Can anyone help me out of the confusion please?

with chevy starters you usally have to shim them,as they bolt to the block instead of the bellhousing .you can buy the shims from most american car spares.after market hi torque mini starters have 4 holes in a line so you can space the starter motor out for the 168 tooth ring gear or in for the smaller ring gears .hope this is off some help

If your block is a 400 it should have the diagonal boltholes from the factory, the 400 motors always used a 168 tooth ringear AFAIK. Looking at the flange on the underside of the crankcase you should have two holes straight across and one other hole on the diagonal so there's a sort of triangle of boltholes; the two diagonal ones are what the 168 tooth starter uses.
