Speedo - Gearbox problem, any help on this please.

Mate of mine has a Cobre with a 2litre fitted and a Type 9 Ford 5 speed box.
Since we re-ritted the engine and new box the outlelt for the cable drive is in a different position to the previous box. Its now close to the chassis rail meaning that the cable wont go directly in, So cash in hand we got a 90 degree adaptor, but this was also too long to fit the space we have between the chassis and the box.
So we thought Electronic, the question now is if he buys an electronic set up the pulse generator that needs to fit in the box - or does it? if it does has anyone any experience of this as to how long they are, or is there an alternative that can be driven just off the prop shaft needing nothing to be fitted into the cable hole in the box which canthen just be blanked off.

Any advice would be welcom, weve scratched heads so much over this weve got bleeding heads!!!

    Thanks Russ D.

You should be able to find someting wich can use an external pickup. A mate of mine has a Westfield kit car, the speedo pickup is a bunch of magnets fixed around the propshaft flange. Think the instruments he used are VDO. CAI (who own the Smiths brand) do an electronic speedo which can use an external pickup too. Telemetrix

alter the chassis to clear the 90 degree adapter you have.

Requires a bit of engineering, but what about taking a small belt drive from the propshaft slip joint to drive the cable via a pulley and spindle; this was the solution I was going to use with a Jag Getrag box which only has an electronic output.

The propshaft slip joint would act as one pulley, The driven pulley would run on a shaft with the speedo cable connected to the end of it.

You'd need the driven pulley to be about 4 times the diameter of the slip joint (check what your old box speedo drive ratio was to get it exact) for the drive ratio.

A round section belt like those used on sewing machines would be all you'd need as hardly any power is being transmitted.
