    Starter Motor Issue Help please!!

    Hey guys,

I have just replaced my starter motor on my 350 SB from a full size one to a high torque mini starter, and now the bendix cog on the new starter fires and hits the ring gear, the new mini starter is supposed to be a universal fit for any 350ci motor?

The full size one I removed had staggered mounting holes and the new one has in line holes but still bolted up. It just seems to be a few mm out.

Any help would be much appreciated?
    Thanks.

    Lightbulb

When I fitted mine I used the supplied shims to get it aligned up ok.
Funny enough I thinkthey did amount toa couple of mm.
I did it using the paper clip spacing method (illustrated in the Real Steel catalogue).

Bloody awful job lying under the car mind.

    Thanks jimbob,
I've tried the shims also but still no luck, I have been reading up on older motors having a SAE starter and the newer metric type starters cannot be used, I'm starting to think this may be the problem I have!

I know, I'm not a fan of lying on my back under the truck either!

If you have a staggered bolt fitment you should've got a starter to match that configuration. I find that "universal" can mean problems from past experience. Rog.
